To Donald Trump’s fans, he’s a take-no-guff tough guy. To his critics, he’s a skin-thinned crybaby. And at least one Trump-friendly pundit, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, wants him to retire the act.
On Monday’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” O’Reilly said the Republican presidential candidate should quit “whining” at the debate and instead focus on a few issues that matter to him. The third and final presidential debate between Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is set to take place Wednesday night at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.
“Stop whining. Stop that and say, ‘Look, I got three things I want to say to you tonight: bang, bang, bang,” O’Reilly told Colbert.
“It’s rigged, it’s rigged, it’s rigged,” the late-night host replied.
“That’s whining,” O’Reilly said. “He should have a little buzzer that whenever he whines — baaa!”
O’Reilly suggested that Trump and Clinton would have a chance to win over voters if they could convince the American people that they can help them. He said his Fox colleague Chris Wallace, who is moderating the debate, should press Trump on the specifics of his various proposals, such as taking oil from ISIS or making Mexico pay for a massive border wall.
Colbert joked that Trump would not answer the question and instead talk about the importance of being tough.
“Here’s what we do,” O’Reilly said. “We have your band, and as soon as he starts that, they start playing. As soon as he starts that stuff, that band starts playing.”
O’Reilly also offered some advice to Clinton. He suggested she ignore Trump, look straight into the camera and say that she’s not as bad as others have portrayed her: “I’m not this dragon lady. I really want to help you, and here’s how I want to help you.”
Trump frequently appears on O’Reilly’s television program, “The O’Reilly Factor,” where the Fox host will sometimes press Trump while giving him advice. Last week, O’Reilly directly told Trump that he was behind among female voters, though Trump said he didn’t believe it. This is despite the fact that the Washington Post had just unearthed a bombshell 2005 video of Trump boasting about forcibly kissing and groping women.
O’Reilly’s Monday advice was somewhat similar to what the Fox host told Trump last year: “You are too thin-skinned.”
“You want to be president,” O’Reilly told him in December of 2015. “Tweet about Putin. Tweet about ISIS. I mean, it looks petty. It looks petty. Don’t you think it looks petty? Don’t you think it looks petty?”
Last year, Trump conceded on CNN’s “New Day” that he does whine and he’s not happy when he’s losing: “I am a whiner and I keep whining and whining until I win.”
